Meigan Fayre - Pembrokeshire

August 1976.

If there's anyone in your ken who'd be interested in adding to some recollections of the Meigan Fayre I'd be happy to co-operate. Meigan was perhaps the most beautiful and wonderful of all the UK free festivals (1976 - I think....) It took place in the Preseli Mountains in Pembrokeshire in west Wales. The preceding days were cold and blowy, but the opening day was a scorcher (it proved to be the start of the UK 1976 heatwave).
About 1000 people (and on that first day, almost all of them were incapable due to the huge consumption of psychedelics... It was the only event I ever went to where it seemed as if the lysergic state was the normal state to be in). Musically it was slightly chaotic : Gong were slightly disappointing, Global Village Trucking Co played one of their less wonderful sets, an inspired duo called Chatelet were wonderful, and a local crazed hippy band called Mazariba were completely astonishing (ask anyone who was there!) - even tho'never heard of before or since. The sunsets over the Irish Sea were phenomenal too.

NME somehow had someone there and astonishingly for those of us who headed back to the cities sharing our wonderful secret were surprised when they ran a two page spread (one for the archivists to dig out - I've lost mine) entitled something like 'Bored of big festivals? - try Meigan, it's psychedelic!)
Sadly I have no photos...

Hi, i just stumbled on to your website..amazing to find.
I am writing from New York, and was the bass player in the band MAZARIBA that Chris Church described....
I could definitely give you a ton of information about the festival. I even have reel to reel tapes that were made at the mixing desk (especially of Mazariba). Of course I'm not sure if they have survived well or not as I don't have a reel to reel..they could be transferred to CD.

Let me know if this would be of any interest,

the band has now resurrected itslef and can be found here

Hello
I have just found a letter written by my dad while at meigan Fayre - we went as a family.
It is dated 10th August 1976 and the address is 'A field, near Crymmych, Cardiganshire, Wales'
Nothing much is said about the entertainment but I does say
"We're camping in a little house we've made from heavy cardboard, bent and joined to make a surprisingly solid 'hemisphere' of triangular panels. The children are having a great time, plenty of space for them to explore without having to cross roads of any sort."

Music

Don't know of any recordings circulating from this festival, but Gong, Global Village Trucking Co , Chatelet and Mazariba played.

We are proud of the contribution we have made to Andy Worthington's sociological history of Stonehenge and the free festival scene in the UK .This new book gives a fascinating insight into the various counter cultural obsessions with the Stones and provides a variety of new perspectives to many of the key events surrounding the Henge such as the Battle Of The Beanfield and the more recent attempts hold a celebration at the Stones during the Solstice.

Sending details of a small book I've just self-published which might be of interest to some readers of your admirable site.
