             SIX
people, one ideal. Two main influences, one result. The ideal is to
make fine music. The influences are philosophy and rock. The result
is fine magical rock music. For two years now, Quintessence have been
together, with every inference that "together" has come to mean. Not
a commune, nevertheless they are a spiritual community. In those two
years they have made three tremendous albums for Island Records, toured
every country in continental Europe, and established themselves as one
of the most exciting live acts to emerge in ages. Add all these things
have occurred despite predictions from those who are supposed to know
the fickle business of entertainment that it would never work. You can't,
they said smugly, marry religion and rock, no matter how sincere the
          band may be.

            IN
THESE days of so called. 'heavy' groups playing at a deafening level
and having expressionless faces , it's a change to hear and see Paul
Brett's Sage. This four-piece group, formed by singer/composer/guitarist/
pianist Paul Brett in 1970, is mainly acoustic and believes very much
in entertaining the audience, both musically and visually .
             On
recordings the group sound softer and often records with a string quartet.
However, because of their acoustic nature the numbers performed on stage
tend to be heavier, incorporating the use of visual effects. . In time
Paul hopes to have a string quartet on all of the groups gigs.
