Stanley Tonkel and Teo Macero
We
are exceptionally fortunate to be in receipt of a number of images of Stanley
Tonkel and Teo Macero
that were taken by an unknown person backstage at the festival. These were found
in the personal affects of the renowned recording engineer Stanley
Tonkel by his son Ray , who kindly made them available for us to display
on the site. Unfortunately, both Stanley and Teo are now deceased, so we cannot
ask them to flesh out what was happening in the pics and just what their role
was . Both were involved with Miles, Teo as Miles's long term producer and Stanley
as engineer on such classic Miles albums as, In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew,
Live Evil and Jack Johnson. Impeccable credentials !
As Miles and other Columbia artists were playing the festival, an assumption could be made that Teo and Stanley were sent by Columbia to oversee those artists' recordings. It looks like both are "relaxing" in most of the photos, although Stanley can be seen making notes with Vic Maile in one image. The Tonkel family believe that they were there to work with other artists and members of the Pye crew confirm that they were supervising producers for Columbia.
